Humble or Me-Bashing?
“I am not a man of great knowledge. I am not a man of great athletic skill. I am not a man of jaw-dropping looks. I am not a man of deep thinking or great theological discovery.”
Do these kinds of statements sound familiar? Our nature is to take humility and turn it into self-deprecation. If we are not careful, we stop soliciting the sympathy we desire and merely become a person who nobody feels that they can really talk to. Why do we do that? It is my personal opinion that we do that as a means of defense against someone ever getting the idea we are prideful or arrogant. However, in going to that manner of extreme, we oftentimes stop sounding humble and sound embarrassing.
Humility is not something we have to tell everyone else about. It is something that is seen, experienced, heard, etc. in the way that we live our lives. Christians must walk on the line that understands our place as the chosen creation of God and understands our place as the servant of God. It is a thin line, but it is a necessary/mandatory one. God does not desire the bragging, arrogant, condescending person to be His spokesperson, but He also does not desire the self-deprecating, self-hating, self-bashing person to be His spokesperson either.
May we remember our places before God and celebrate the goodness of God found in our lives everyday!
